The image
The picture is the earliest part of morning. The sun is not up yet, but the sky has begun to pale along the horizon, and shapes that were invisible in the night start to show their outlines. The line gives no landscape and no watcher, only the light. It is a light without a source in view: everything is lit a little, from the sky itself, before any single brightness appears.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, which is how the tradition reads every degree image, the first light is about awareness arriving before its cause is visible. Our keyword is Beginning of awareness, and our keynote says that a new day declares itself before the Sun is seen. The picture is quiet and slow. Nothing happens suddenly at dawn; the light grows until it is simply day. One way to read a placement in this degree is as a sensitivity to beginnings before they announce themselves, a sense that something is starting while others are still asleep, and as the patience to let understanding grow rather than force it. The grey light also has its own beauty, softer than noon, and the image honours it.
Lynda Hill reads the dawn between the degree behind it, as background, and the degree ahead, as aim. Behind this one lies Leo 26, a rainbow arching overhead, light and rain together; ahead lies Leo 28, lots of small birds crowded along one branch of a huge tree. By her rule the rainbow's colours give way to the plain first light, and in that light the birds wake and gather, the dawn chorus taking its place on the branch. As a reading aid, the opposite degree, Aquarius 27, shows violets heaped in a bowl of very old pottery: fresh life held in an old vessel, beside this degree's fresh light rising out of an old night.

A planet or point anywhere from Leo 26°00′ up to, but not including, Leo 27°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Leo 26°50′ reads Leo 27, and so does one at Leo 26°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Leo 28 after Leo 26°59′, or back into Leo 26 before Leo 26°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
