The image
The picture is a letter that has been written and not closed. It may be folded in an envelope with the flap left up, or lying open on a desk; either way, no seal or glue protects it. The line gives no writer and no addressee. Before October 2026 our own table also printed this degree's line at Virgo 30, a copying error from the source our old table was transcribed from; it now belongs to Leo 30 alone.
Meaning
The tradition reads degree images as symbols, and the open letter is a symbol of private words left unguarded. Our keyword is Open confidence, and our keynote says that what was private is left open for trust, or for anyone. The image does not decide between those two. A letter left unsealed may be a sign of trust, of carelessness or of a wish to be read. One way to read a placement in this degree is as a frankness that does not hide its thoughts, an openness that trusts others to be decent with what they find, and as the question of who, in the end, reads what is left open. At the last degree of Leo, a sign of display, it shows the most personal thing of all laid out for view.
Lynda Hill's habit of reading the neighbours sets the letter between a background and a heading. Behind Leo 30 lies Leo 29, the sea maiden, half woman and half fish, with half of herself kept hidden; ahead lies Virgo 1, the head of a man, nothing more, the first image of Virgo. By her rule the half-hidden figure gives way to a letter that hides nothing, and the open letter gives way to a picture of the thinking mind alone, as if Virgo began by reading what Leo had left open. As a reading aid, the opposite degree, Aquarius 30, shows Ardath's field in blossom: a field from a story, flowering for whoever enters it, beside a letter that lies open for whoever comes by.

A planet or point anywhere from Leo 29°00′ up to, but not including, Leo 30°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Leo 29°41′ reads Leo 30, and so does one at Leo 29°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Virgo 1 after Leo 29°59′, or back into Leo 29 before Leo 29°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.
- Dane Rudhyar (1973)
- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
