The image
The picture is a celebration on the water. A houseboat, a home built to float, is moored or drifting, and on it people are having a party: music, talk, food on deck. The line does not say on which river or lake, or what the party is for. A houseboat is half house and half boat, so the guests are at home and afloat at once. Until October 2026 our table had a line at this degree that belongs to no Sabian degree; the houseboat party is the image that does.
Meaning
Read as the tradition reads its images, the houseboat party is a symbol of pleasure taken in a home that moves. Our keyword is Floating festivity, and our keynote says that pleasure is taken on a home that moves with the water. The picture joins two ideas, the comfort of home and the freedom of drifting, and the party belongs to both. One way to read a placement in this degree is as a talent for making a home wherever one is and filling it with friends, and as an easy, playful relation to change, letting the current carry the gathering along. It can also be read as a reminder that a party on the water depends on the water staying calm.
Lynda Hill's practice frames each degree with the one before, its background, and the one after, its heading. The background here is Leo 18, someone who teaches chemistry, knowledge of change passed on; the heading is Leo 20, the Zuni honouring the Sun. By her rule the classroom gives way to a floating party, and the party gives way to an image of a people honouring the source of light, festivity turning toward reverence. As a reading aid, the opposite degree, Aquarius 19, shows a forest fire put out: danger met and brought under control, beside this degree's light-hearted pleasure on the water.

A planet or point anywhere from Leo 18°00′ up to, but not including, Leo 19°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Leo 18°54′ reads Leo 19, and so does one at Leo 18°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Leo 20 after Leo 18°59′, or back into Leo 18 before Leo 18°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
