The image

The picture puts two things together that rarely meet. One is a man dressed formally, as for a dinner or a ceremony; the other is a deer, a creature of woods and open country, with its antlers laid back. The line does not explain why they are together, and it does not say who is leading whom. Antlers folded back are not raised to fight, so the animal is calm; the man's clothes are a kind of armour of manners.

Meaning

The tradition reads degree images as symbols, and this one is a symbol of two natures at peace beside each other. Our keyword is Civilised and wild together, and our keynote says that social polish and natural instinct stand side by side, tamed. Neither has conquered the other. The man has not hunted the deer and the deer has not fled the man; both have set their weapons aside, one his rough edges, the other its points. One way to read a placement in this degree is as an ability to carry good manners and strong instincts at once, to be at ease in a formal room without losing contact with something untamed, and as the balance that keeps either side from taking over.

Lynda Hill reads the degree before a placement as background and the degree after as aim, which she calls the Karmic Condition and the Quest Degree. Before Leo 4 comes Leo 3, long hair cut into a bob, appearance chosen and shaped; after it comes Leo 5, rocks shaped by nature at a cliff's edge. By her rule the shaping of one's own look leads to a picture of polish and wildness side by side, and both give way to forms that no hand made at all, carved over ages by weather. As a reading aid only, the opposite degree, Aquarius 4, shows a healer from India's Hindu tradition: a discipline that trains body and mind together, beside this degree's quieter truce between the cultivated and the wild.

A planet or point anywhere from Leo 3°00′ up to, but not including, Leo 4°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Leo 3°39′ reads Leo 4, and so does one at Leo 3°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Leo 5 after Leo 3°59′, or back into Leo 3 before Leo 3°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
