The image
A man from India, trained in a Hindu tradition of practice, sits or stands ready to attend to those who come to him. The picture centres on his discipline: years of study, devotion and method carried in his bearing.

Meaning

What we read in the picture is the joining of inner training and outer service. The figure has spent a long time learning, and what he learned is not kept for himself. We read the degree as the quality of a person whose discipline makes them useful to others: patience, attention, a steadiness that people come to rely on. One way to see it is in anyone who brings a practised calm into other people's difficulties, or whose spiritual life shows in how they treat those around them. The image can also be read as a question about authority and trust, since those who come to such a figure place great confidence in him. Readers in the tradition take the picture as a description and attach no promise to it.
Hill calls the degree before a placement its Karmic Condition and the one after its Quest Degree, and reads them as its past and its pursuit. Before it is Aquarius 3, a sailor who has deserted, a person who left a discipline behind; here is someone who has given his life to one. After it comes Aquarius 5, the ancestors gathered in council, where one practitioner's learning becomes the wisdom of a whole lineage.
The opposite degree, Leo 4, a man in formal clothes beside a deer whose antlers are folded back, serves as a reading aid. Both are pictures of something tamed and composed; the deer and the dressed man are the wild and the civil side by side, the practitioner a single life shaped by long training.

The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Aquarius 3°39′ reads Aquarius 4, and so does one at Aquarius 3°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Aquarius 5 after Aquarius 3°59′, or back into Aquarius 3 before Aquarius 3°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
