The image
A dog stands or lies at a gate or a door, ears up, eyes on the road. It is a working animal, there to watch over a house, a yard or a flock, and it stays at its post through the hours whether anything happens or not.
Before October 2026 our table showed a line at this degree that is not a Sabian image, and it was replaced.
Meaning
Our keyword is "Loyal vigilance", and our keynote: protection keeps faith even when no one is watching. Both are ours.
A guard dog's value lies mostly in the long hours when nothing happens. We read the degree as loyalty shown through constancy: staying alert, staying at one's post, caring for what has been entrusted. One way to see it is in people who protect others quietly, without needing to be thanked, or in a steady attention to the safety and wellbeing of a household or group. The image can also be read for its other edge, vigilance that becomes suspicion of every stranger. The tradition takes the picture as a description and leaves the balance with the person and the rest of the chart.
Hill names the two adjoining degrees the Karmic Condition and the Quest Degree, one behind and one ahead. The degree before is Aquarius 16, a captain of industry behind his desk, authority that directs others; here the authority is loyalty itself. The degree after is Aquarius 18, a man whose mask has been pulled off, where the watcher's attention reveals what was hidden.
As a reading aid, the opposite degree is Leo 17, a church choir singing in everyday clothes, without robes. Both pictures are of faithfulness; the choir sings together without ceremony, the dog keeps watch alone without reward, and the two can be read as shared devotion and solitary loyalty.

A planet or point anywhere from Aquarius 16°00′ up to, but not including, Aquarius 17°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Aquarius 16°40′ reads Aquarius 17, and so does one at Aquarius 16°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Aquarius 18 after Aquarius 16°59′, or back into Aquarius 16 before Aquarius 16°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Aquarius 17 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Aquarius 16, Aquarius 18 and Leo 17 beside it.

- Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.
- Dane Rudhyar (1973)
- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
