The image
A chrysalis hangs from a twig, split open, and a butterfly is pulling itself free: wings still crumpled and damp, body emerging, legs gripping the empty case. The picture holds the effort of the last stage of change, before the wings have spread.
Until October 2026 our table carried the image of the next degree, Aquarius 30, at this degree, so this picture was missing from the product; the numbering was corrected then.
Meaning
Our keyword is "Metamorphosis", and our keynote: a completed transformation steps into the open. Both are ours.
Inside a chrysalis a caterpillar has been entirely remade, and the butterfly's struggle to get out is part of its strengthening. We read the degree as the moment when a long, hidden change becomes visible: a person who has been reworking themselves in private finally appears as who they have become. One way to see it is in the end of a period of study, retreat or reinvention, when the new form is ready but not yet used to the air. The image can also be read for the vulnerability of that moment, wings still soft. Readers in the tradition take the picture as a description and attach no outcome to it.
Hill would read the degree behind as what this placement has to work with and the degree ahead as what it works toward. Before it comes Aquarius 28, a tree cut down and sawn into lengths, something living ended for use; here an ending turns out to be a beginning. After it comes Aquarius 30, Ardath's field in blossom, where the new butterfly finds a whole field in flower.
As a reading aid, the opposite degree is Leo 29, a sea maiden, half woman and half fish. Both are creatures between two forms; the mermaid lives in two worlds at once, while the butterfly is passing from one form to another for good.

A planet or point anywhere from Aquarius 28°00′ up to, but not including, Aquarius 29°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Aquarius 28°04′ reads Aquarius 29, and so does one at Aquarius 28°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Aquarius 30 after Aquarius 28°59′, or back into Aquarius 28 before Aquarius 28°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Dane Rudhyar (1973)
- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
