The image

A staircase, and on it a line of people, one on each step, so that every person stands a little higher than the one below and a little lower than the one above. No one is at the top or the bottom alone; the picture is of a whole series, arranged by height.

Before October 2026 our table carried a line here that is not the Sabian image of any degree, and it was replaced.

Meaning

Our keyword is "Levels of development" and our keynote: every stage of growth has its place on the same ascent.

A staircase is the plainest picture of progress, and the people on it show that progress is a matter of position rather than worth: each is where they are, and each step is needed. We read the degree as the recognition that people stand at different points on paths they share, and that the one ahead and the one behind are part of the same climb. One way to see it is in schools, crafts and communities where beginners and the experienced work side by side. The image can also be read as a question about hierarchy, since a staircase can become a ladder of rank. Readers in the tradition hold that open and treat the picture as descriptive.

Lynda Hill links each image to the one that precedes it, as background, and the one that follows, as the next task. The degree before is Aquarius 11, a man in private talk with his inspiration, a single person's insight; here that insight takes its place in a series. The degree after is Aquarius 13, a barometer measuring the pressure of the air, where the steps of growth give way to an instrument that reads conditions.

The opposite degree, Leo 12, a garden party on the lawn as evening falls, serves as a reading aid. At the garden party everyone mingles on one level; on the stairs everyone has a different height, and the pair holds social ease beside ordered development.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Aquarius 11°00′ up to, but not including, Aquarius 12°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Aquarius 11°35′ reads Aquarius 12, and so does one at Aquarius 11°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Aquarius 13 after Aquarius 11°59′, or back into Aquarius 11 before Aquarius 11°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Aquarius 12 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Aquarius 11, Aquarius 13 and Leo 12 beside it.

Marc Edmund Jones (1953)

Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
