The image
A display of wax figures, life-size and carefully modelled, each dressed in an elegant gown. They stand as if about to move or speak, and they never do. Visitors look at them closely: the detail of the faces, the fabric of the clothes. The picture holds that uncanny stillness. The picture comes from a single day's sitting in San Diego in 1925, the day Wheeler and Jones recorded Aquarius 8.
Meaning
Our keyword is "Perfect but lifeless" and our keynote: form is complete and admired, but nothing moves within it.
The waxworks are a triumph of craft and a picture of absence at the same time. We read the degree as the difference between appearance and life: a presentation that is faultless on the surface and empty underneath, or a role played so perfectly that the person behind it has disappeared. One way to see it is in moments when someone realises they have been performing rather than living, or in the pleasure of finely made things that are admired but not used. The image can also be read kindly, as the art of preserving a moment so that others can study it. The tradition reads the picture as descriptive, with both readings open.
Hill reads one step back for what has shaped a placement and one step forward for what draws it on. The degree before is Aquarius 7, an infant breaking out of an eggshell, life bursting from a form; here form has no life in it. The degree after is Aquarius 9, a flag that has turned into an eagle, where a lifeless emblem comes alive, the reverse of the waxworks.
The opposite degree, Leo 8, a revolutionary agitator spreading his message, serves as a reading aid. The agitator is all motion and urgency; the wax figures are all stillness and finish, and between them the page sets zeal for change beside the frozen perfection change might break.

A planet or point anywhere from Aquarius 7°00′ up to, but not including, Aquarius 8°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Aquarius 7°07′ reads Aquarius 8, and so does one at Aquarius 7°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Aquarius 9 after Aquarius 7°59′, or back into Aquarius 7 before Aquarius 7°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
