The image

The picture is of the end of a shift. Men who have spent hours underground climb toward the light, tired and dirty, carrying with them what they have dug. The image catches the upward movement rather than the work itself: the shaft, the ladder or the cage, the change from darkness to open air. It is described as an image only, without any of the hazards that real mining carries.

Our old table gave this degree nearly in the 1925 card's words until 2026-10-10. The present line is our own, after the image Elsie Wheeler described and Marc Edmund Jones recorded in San Diego.

Meaning

The climb out of the pit can be read as the return from any long descent: from study, from a difficult season, from concentration so deep that the surface world was forgotten. Our keyword is "Return to the surface", and our keynote says those who worked in the dark emerge with what they dug out. The stress is on both halves. There is relief in reaching daylight, and there is also a yield: something brought up that could only be found below. A placement here can be read as a capacity for sustained effort out of sight, and for bringing its results into the open.

By Lynda Hill's rule, Libra 12 has a Karmic Condition in the degree behind it and a Quest Degree in the degree ahead. The professor of Libra 11, looking out over his glasses, stands before this one; after it come the children of Libra 13, blowing soap bubbles. The three pictures can be read as a measuring look, a hard ascent with something earned, and then pure play, light forms made for the joy of it.

Opposite lies Aries 12, white geese gathered together, our "Safety in the flock". Read beside it as a reading aid, the miners and the geese share a picture of company: workers who go down and come up together, and birds that keep together in the open.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Libra 11°00′ up to, but not including, Libra 12°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Libra 11°35′ reads Libra 12, and so does one at Libra 11°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Libra 13 after Libra 11°59′, or back into Libra 11 before Libra 11°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Marc Edmund Jones (1953)

Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

The Sabian Assembly

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
