The image

Most people have met this look. The professor has been reading, or listening, and now he raises his eyes without removing his glasses, so that he sees the room over the top of them. The gesture is half habit and half judgement: the near work is set aside for a moment while he weighs what is in front of him. The line shows only the look, not what provoked it.

The degree goes back to the images Elsie Wheeler described to Marc Edmund Jones in 1925. Before 2026-10-10 our table printed a line very close to Rudhyar's 1973 rewording here; the line now is our own.

Meaning

Lynda Hill's names for the two neighbours of Libra 11 are the Karmic Condition, before it, and the Quest Degree, after it. Libra 11 follows Libra 10, the canoe brought through rough water by careful handling, and precedes Libra 12, miners climbing up out of the pit. The professor's look sits between practical skill and hard labour as the moment of assessment, when experience stops to measure what it sees.

Read as a symbol, the glance over the spectacles is critical in the older sense of the word: it discerns. Our keyword is "Critical appraisal", and our keynote says that knowledge takes a careful, measuring look. A placement here can be read as a habit of examining before accepting, of noticing the flaw in an argument or the detail out of place. The image carries a little comedy too: the raised eyes can be sceptical, amused or simply short-sighted, and part of reading it is deciding which. It need not be harsh. A good appraisal sees what is right as clearly as what is wrong.

The degree opposite, Aries 11, is the elected head of a country, our "Representative authority". As a reading aid, the pair sets two kinds of standing side by side: the authority given by the votes of many, and the authority earned by close and patient study. One speaks for others; the other looks hard at what is said.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Libra 10°00′ up to, but not including, Libra 11°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Libra 10°58′ reads Libra 11, and so does one at Libra 10°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Libra 12 after Libra 10°59′, or back into Libra 10 before Libra 10°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Libra 11 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Libra 10, Libra 12 and Aries 11 beside it.

Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

The Sabian Assembly

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
