The image
The picture is strange in a quiet way: a full, loud fire, and no one in the room. The house has been abandoned, yet the hearth burns as if a family were about to come in from the cold. We are not told who lit it or how it stays alight. The image keeps only the contrast between the heat and noise of the flames and the stillness of empty rooms.
The 1925 image behind this line was described by Elsie Wheeler and set down by Marc Edmund Jones; our table once printed a line taken almost word for word from Rudhyar's 1973 rewording, and the line here replaced it on 2026-10-10.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the burning hearth can stand for something that carries on after its purpose has gone: a habit kept after the need for it ended, a love that goes on giving with no one to receive it, a tradition maintained in a house its people have left. Our keyword is "Warmth kept for no one", and our keynote says the hearth burns on though those it warmed have gone. The reading can be tender or uneasy. It may be loyalty, keeping the fire alight for those who might return, or it may be energy spent where it can no longer reach anyone. A placement here can be read as raising that question about where warmth is going.
For Lynda Hill, the degree before Libra 8 is its Karmic Condition and the one after it is its Quest Degree. Here the degree before is Libra 7, the woman who feeds her hens and guards them; the degree after is Libra 9, three paintings by old masters on a gallery wall. One reading of the run: care given to the living, care that continues after they have gone, and the finest work of the past kept and honoured for anyone who comes to look.
Opposite stands Aries 8, a big beribboned hat set toward the east, our "Facing the dawn". Taken beside it as a reading aid, a thing worn for show and turned toward a new day meets a fire burning on in a house whose day is over.

A planet or point anywhere from Libra 7°00′ up to, but not including, Libra 8°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Libra 7°07′ reads Libra 8, and so does one at Libra 7°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Libra 9 after Libra 7°59′, or back into Libra 7 before Libra 7°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
