Reaching across the gulf of knowledge

The image

The picture is partly abstract. There is a gulf, and it is a gulf of knowledge: a gap between what some people understand and what others do. On each side people stretch toward the other, trying to close the distance. The image does not say whether they succeed. It catches the reaching, hands and minds extended over the space between them.

Elsie Wheeler described this image to Marc Edmund Jones in 1925. Our earlier line for the degree paraphrased other wordings; on 2026-10-10 it gave way to the line on this page, which is our own.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the gulf can be any gap between specialisms, generations, cultures or simply two people who think differently. Our keyword is "Spanning what is known", and our keynote says people try to connect what one part of knowledge holds with another. A placement here can be read as a gift for translation and synthesis: explaining one field in the terms of another, noticing that two separate discoveries fit together, building the conversation between them. The image is honest about the difficulty. A gulf is wide, and the reaching is effort, but the people in the picture keep at it.

Lynda Hill would read Libra 29 with its Karmic Condition, the degree before, and its Quest Degree, the degree after. Before Libra 29 stands Libra 28, where light keeps growing around a man standing still; after it comes Libra 30, the head of a philosopher marked by three bumps of knowledge. The three pictures can be followed from awareness dawning, to people reaching across what separates their knowledge, to wisdom gathered into one thinker's mind.

The degree opposite is Aries 29, a choir of heavenly voices, our "Heavenly singing". Read beside it as an aid, it gives the other half of the picture: where Libra 29 shows the effort to join separate understandings, Aries 29 shows many voices already sounding as one.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Libra 28°00′ up to, but not including, Libra 29°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Libra 28°04′ reads Libra 29, and so does one at Libra 28°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Libra 30 after Libra 28°59′, or back into Libra 28 before Libra 28°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Marc Edmund Jones (1953)

Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

The Sabian Assembly

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
