A canoe steered through rough water

The image

A light boat, fast water and a paddler reading the current. The canoe is not out of danger yet, but it is moving toward calmer water and a landing, and the picture catches it in the middle of the passage. Everything depends on small, quick corrections: a stroke on this side, a lean on that. The image is an image only; it describes a passage through rough water.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the canoe stands for competence in motion. The water is not mastered, only negotiated, and the boat comes through because the person in it pays close attention and does not panic. Our keyword is "Through to safety", and our keynote says that careful handling brings one out of danger toward a safe shore. A placement here can be read as a gift for steadiness in unsettled conditions, a feel for timing, and a preference for skill over force. The image also says something about scale: a canoe cannot fight a river, so it moves with it while keeping its own line.

Lynda Hill calls the degree that precedes Libra 10 its Karmic Condition and the one that follows its Quest Degree. Before Libra 10 comes Libra 9, three paintings by old masters, the past's best work kept safe on a wall; after it comes Libra 11, a professor looking out over the rims of his glasses. The run of images moves from admiring accomplished work, to accomplishing a difficult passage oneself, to the measuring, critical look of someone who knows a subject well.

The opposite degree, Aries 10, shows a man giving inherited symbols fresh shapes, our "Renewing tradition". As a reading aid, the pair joins two kinds of skilled navigation: steering a boat through a living current, and steering inherited images through a changing present.

A planet or point anywhere from Libra 9°00′ up to, but not including, Libra 10°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Libra 9°21′ reads Libra 10, and so does one at Libra 9°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Libra 11 after Libra 9°59′, or back into Libra 9 before Libra 9°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
