Two men held to account

The image

Two men are led away. The line does not say what they did, who holds them, or what follows; it shows only the moment they are stopped and taken in. The picture is one of the sterner images of the set, and it is described here as an image only: it makes no statement about any reader's own conduct, dealings or their consequences.

Elsie Wheeler described this degree's image to Marc Edmund Jones in 1925; our old table carried a paraphrase of other wordings until 2026-10-10, and the line here is our own.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the custody of the two men is about limits. A group of people lives by terms it has agreed, and the image shows the point where those terms are enforced. Our keyword is "Called to account", and our keynote says society stops those who have broken its terms. A placement here can be read in many directions: as an awareness of rules and of fairness, as a readiness to hold others to their word, or as an inner moment of reckoning, when one's own conduct is looked at squarely. That there are two men, not one, can be read as shared responsibility.

Lynda Hill would read Libra 18 with its Karmic Condition, the degree before, and its Quest Degree, the degree after. Here the degree before is Libra 17, the sea captain who has given up the sea; the degree after is Libra 19, thieves lying low in a hideout. Taken in order, the pictures move from a life laid quietly to rest, to the moment of being called to account, to what stays hidden and waits.

The opposite degree, Aries 18, is an empty hammock, our "Rest not taken". As a reading aid, the two images present different kinds of stopping: the rest that is offered and left unused, and the halt that is imposed from outside.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Libra 17°00′ up to, but not including, Libra 18°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Libra 17°17′ reads Libra 18, and so does one at Libra 17°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Libra 19 after Libra 17°59′, or back into Libra 17 before Libra 17°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

The Sabian Assembly

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
