A crowd taking its ease on the sand

The image

A summer beach, towels and umbrellas, people sitting, lying, wading, calling to each other: the picture is of a crowd, but a relaxed one, not gathered for any purpose except the day itself. Everyone has come to the same strip of sand, yet each is doing very little. The sea is the backdrop, and its sound covers the talk. In 1925 the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler saw this picture for an unseen card, the one marked Libra 21.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the beach crowd shows a kind of togetherness that asks nothing. People who would never meet otherwise share the same shore, and the only thing required is to be at ease. Our keyword is "Mass relaxation", and our keynote says many people take their ease together at the edge of the sea. A placement here can be read as a feeling for the public side of leisure, for holidays and common pleasures, and for the relief of being one of many with no part to play. The water's edge can also be read as a boundary, the place where ordinary life stops and something larger begins.

The opposite degree, Aries 21, shows a boxer stepping into the ring, our "Readiness to contend". As a reading aid, the pair contrasts the arena and the beach: one person entering a contest under everyone's eyes, and a whole crowd letting go of contest altogether.

Lynda Hill calls the degree that precedes Libra 21 its Karmic Condition and the one that follows its Quest Degree. Libra 20, the rabbi devoted to his tradition, precedes this degree, and Libra 22, a child at a fountain letting the birds drink, follows it. From observance kept day by day, the pictures turn to a crowd at rest and then to one small kindness at the water.

A planet or point anywhere from Libra 20°00′ up to, but not including, Libra 21°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Libra 20°08′ reads Libra 21, and so does one at Libra 20°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Libra 22 after Libra 20°59′, or back into Libra 20 before Libra 20°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
