Morning comes and nothing is the same

The image

The picture is a dawn, but not an ordinary one. The light comes up as it does every morning, yet the world it shows is no longer the world of the night before. The line gives no cause for the change: no storm, no event, no visitor. It records only the waking and the strangeness, the sense of looking at known things and finding them altered.

The image was described by Elsie Wheeler in 1925 and written down by Marc Edmund Jones; the wording here is our own, written after the 1925 image.

Meaning

One way to read this degree is as a change in the one who sees rather than in the thing seen. The morning light is the same light; what differs is what it falls on, or how it is received. Our keyword is "Transformation overnight", and our keynote says that a single turning of the light shows nothing is as it was. A placement here can be read as an emphasis on fresh starts that arrive without warning, on the shock and the gift of a sudden new view, and on the work of catching up with a world that has quietly moved on. The image does not say whether the change is welcome. It asks only that it be noticed.

Read the way Lynda Hill reads a chart, Libra 3 looks back to a Karmic Condition and forward to a Quest Degree. Before this one is Libra 2, the light that passes from one age of humanity to the next; after it is Libra 4, people gathered around a campfire. The run of pictures can be followed as a light handed on, a day transformed by it, and then a small group drawing close around a fire of its own.

Across the wheel is Aries 3, a cameo in which a man's face is drawn in the shape of his land's borders, our "Identity and homeland". Read beside it as an aid, the dawn that changes everything meets a portrait in which a person and a place have grown into one fixed shape.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Libra 2°00′ up to, but not including, Libra 3°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Libra 2°02′ reads Libra 3, and so does one at Libra 2°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Libra 4 after Libra 2°59′, or back into Libra 2 before Libra 2°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

The Sabian Assembly

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
