Paths that wind round and come back

The image

Picture a garden maze, a hillside track that spirals, or the worn circuit of a walker who takes the same route every day. The line gives paths and their shape, no more: they go round and come back. Whether anyone walks them, and whether the walker is lost or content, is left open. The image is close to a pattern, a drawing of lines curving back on themselves.

The picture comes from the 1925 session in which Elsie Wheeler described each degree's image to Marc Edmund Jones; our table printed a line close to Rudhyar's 1973 rewording until 2026-10-10, when our own replaced it.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, circular paths can feel like frustration, the sense of going round and arriving nowhere new. Our keyword, "Recurrence", and our keynote, that movement returns on itself and the way round is the way through, read them more kindly. A path that comes back lets the walker see the same ground with new eyes; a practice repeated every day deepens rather than stalls. A placement here can be read as a relationship to repetition: to habits, cycles and returns, and to the patience to keep walking a route until it yields something.

The opposite degree, Aries 15, shows a Native weaver at a loom, our "Patterned craft". Read beside it as a reading aid, the shuttle that travels back and forth across the warp and the path that curves back on itself are close cousins: in both, pattern comes from return.

Lynda Hill treats the degree just before Libra 15 as its Karmic Condition and the degree just after as its Quest Degree. Before Libra 15 is Libra 14, a siesta taken in the noon heat; after it is Libra 16, a jetty carried away by the water. The circling paths sit between rest and loss, as the patient going round that comes before having to rebuild a point of departure.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Libra 14°00′ up to, but not including, Libra 15°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Libra 14°26′ reads Libra 15, and so does one at Libra 14°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Libra 16 after Libra 14°59′, or back into Libra 14 before Libra 14°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Libra 15 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Libra 14, Libra 16 and Aries 15 beside it.

Marc Edmund Jones (1953)

Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

The Sabian Assembly

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
