The image
The captain is ashore for good. Perhaps he lives in a cottage within sight of the harbour, perhaps far inland; the line says only that he has left the sea. Everything he knows about weather, ships and crews is still with him, but it is no longer put to use at the wheel. The picture is of a man between two lives, the active one behind him and the reflective one in front.
The image is from Elsie Wheeler's 1925 session with Marc Edmund Jones. Until 2026-10-10 our table printed a line almost in Rudhyar's 1973 words; this page carries our own line instead.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the retired captain carries a kind of authority that no longer needs to be exercised. He has made the voyages; he has nothing left to prove. Our keyword is "Experience at rest", and our keynote says one who has made the voyages now rests and remembers. A placement here can be read as a feeling for the value of what has already been lived, for stories and lessons drawn from it, and for the dignity of stepping back. The image can also hold a note of longing, the sailor who still watches the horizon.
Lynda Hill would place a Karmic Condition just behind Libra 17 and a Quest Degree just ahead of it. Libra 16, the jetty swept away by the water, comes before; Libra 18, two men taken into custody, comes after. Followed in that order, a point of departure is lost, a man of the sea comes ashore for good, and the next picture turns to society holding people to account on land.
The degree opposite is Aries 17, two prim women who have never married, our "Shared reserve". Placed beside it as a reading aid, it shows another life of quiet retirement from the busy world, where companionship rests on long acquaintance rather than adventure or talk.

A planet or point anywhere from Libra 16°00′ up to, but not including, Libra 17°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Libra 16°40′ reads Libra 17, and so does one at Libra 16°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Libra 18 after Libra 16°59′, or back into Libra 16 before Libra 16°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Libra 17 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Libra 16, Libra 18 and Aries 17 beside it.

- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
