Down from the heights to hear one voice

The image

The slope is full of people coming down: along paths, across meadows, in families and in groups, all heading toward a place at the foot of the mountain where one man stands to speak. The picture is of movement converging on a single point. We do not hear what he says. The line is about the drawing power of a voice, not its message.

Until 2026-10-10 our table carried this degree very nearly as the 1925 card has it. Since then the degree has had our own line, describing the same picture.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the crowd on the mountain is about attraction to a message. People leave the heights, which in many traditions are where one goes to be alone with something larger, and come down to hear a person instead. Our keyword is "Drawn to one voice", and our keynote says many come down from the heights to listen to a single speaker. A placement here can be read from either end: as the gift of speaking in a way that gathers people, or as the readiness to go and listen. The image can also prompt a question about following, and about what a crowd is looking for when it gathers.

Lynda Hill calls the degree that precedes Scorpio 24 its Karmic Condition and the one that follows its Quest Degree. Before Scorpio 24 lies Scorpio 23, the rabbit turned fairy; after it lies Scorpio 25, where X-rays show what is inside. From a change of form, the run goes to a crowd gathered by a voice, and then to a way of seeing straight through the surface of things.

Across the wheel is Taurus 24, a horseman of the Plains who carries the trophies of his battles openly, our "Marks of victory". As a reading aid, the pair contrasts two kinds of standing before others: a rider showing what he has won, and a speaker whose only display is his voice.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Scorpio 23°00′ up to, but not including, Scorpio 24°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Scorpio 23°29′ reads Scorpio 24, and so does one at Scorpio 23°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Scorpio 25 after Scorpio 23°59′, or back into Scorpio 23 before Scorpio 23°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Marc Edmund Jones (1953)

Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

The Sabian Assembly

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
