The image
The candle is lit and the hand that holds it is young. Perhaps it is a procession, perhaps a dark house, perhaps a vigil; the line gives only the person and the flame. Anyone who has carried a candle knows the posture it asks for: a slow pace, a hand cupped round the wick, eyes on the light. The picture is quiet and concentrated.
Elsie Wheeler described the image in 1925 and Marc Edmund Jones noted it on his card. Our table carried a line very close to Rudhyar's 1973 rewording until 2026-10-10; the line here is our own.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the candle is something entrusted. It is not the young person's own invention; it was lit and handed on, and now it depends on them. Our keyword is "Carrying the flame", and our keynote says the young take responsibility for keeping a light alive. A placement here can be read as seriousness about what one has been given, a readiness to carry values, skills or hopes forward, and the attentiveness that small, vulnerable things need. The image is not heavy. There is pride in it too, the pleasure of being trusted with the light.
The degree opposite is Taurus 4, gold waiting where a rainbow touches the ground, our "Promised reward", read as a direction more than a place. As a reading aid the pair contrasts two kinds of hope: one shining far off at the rainbow's end, and one held close, in a flame one must look after step by step.
Lynda Hill's rule gives Scorpio 4 two neighbours with names: behind it the Karmic Condition, ahead of it the Quest Degree. Before Scorpio 4 stands Scorpio 3, neighbours raising a house together; after it, Scorpio 5, a coast of enormous rocks. The run passes from shared building, to a light carried by one young person, to the solid shore that stands against the sea.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Scorpio 3°00′ up to, but not including, Scorpio 4°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Scorpio 3°09′ reads Scorpio 4, and so does one at Scorpio 3°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Scorpio 5 after Scorpio 3°59′, or back into Scorpio 3 before Scorpio 3°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. In EsoTerrier's Sabian chart the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant are read first, then the Midheaven and the planets; each placement in Scorpio 4 carries the image, keyword and keynote above, with Scorpio 3, Scorpio 5 and Taurus 4 beside it.

- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
