The image
The sea comes in and the rocks receive it. They are huge, rough and old, and the water breaks white against them before falling back to try again. There are no people in the picture, no ships and no buildings, only the meeting of stone and sea along a coast. The image is about scale and endurance more than drama.
The picture is one of those Elsie Wheeler described to Marc Edmund Jones in San Diego in 1925. Our earlier line was near Rudhyar's 1973 wording; since 2026-10-10 the degree carries our own line.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the rocky coast stands for firmness under constant pressure. The waves never stop and the rocks never move, and over time each shapes the other: the sea wears the stone, and the stone gives the sea its shape. Our keyword is "Resistance", and our keynote says what is solid stands against ceaseless pressure. A placement here can be read as steadiness, stubbornness and staying power, the capacity to hold a position or a principle while things beat against it. The image can also ask what such firmness asks of the one who holds it, and what is gained by a little give.
Lynda Hill sets Scorpio 5 between its Karmic Condition, one degree back, and its Quest Degree, one degree on. Scorpio 4, a young person carrying a lit candle, comes before this degree; Scorpio 6, prospectors rushing toward a gold strike, comes after. The three can be read as a small light protected, a great shore that protects itself, and a crowd that leaves settled life behind to chase a promise.
Across the wheel lies Taurus 5, a widow standing beside a freshly dug grave, our "Grief that opens", an image of loss described as an image only. As a reading aid, the pair holds two kinds of standing firm: the rocks that do not yield to the sea, and a person who stands at the edge of an ending and remains.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Scorpio 4°00′ up to, but not including, Scorpio 5°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Scorpio 4°46′ reads Scorpio 5, and so does one at Scorpio 4°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Scorpio 6 after Scorpio 4°59′, or back into Scorpio 4 before Scorpio 4°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
