The fairy king nearing his own country

The image

We see the fairy king on his way back. His kingdom lies just ahead, in the hollow hills or under the wood, and he is coming near its border, perhaps with a train of followers, perhaps alone. The line holds him at the point of approach, before he crosses over. It is a picture from folklore, and it carries that world's mixture of grandeur and strangeness.

Elsie Wheeler described this image to Marc Edmund Jones in 1925.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, the fairy king's return is about authority over an inner world. His realm is not of ordinary ground; it is the domain of imagination, dream and enchantment, and he is coming back to rule it. Our keyword is "Returning sovereignty", and our keynote says rule over a subtle realm comes home to it. A placement here can be read as a reclaiming of one's own inner territory, a renewed confidence in imagination, and a sense of returning to a place one is meant to govern. The image is regal without being harsh; its power is of the dreaming kind.

Read the way Lynda Hill reads a chart, Scorpio 28 looks back to a Karmic Condition and forward to a Quest Degree. Scorpio 27, the marching army band, lies before; Scorpio 29, a Native mother pleading with the chief for her children's lives, lies after. One way through the three: worldly order on parade, a subtle sovereign coming home, and then a mother standing before earthly power on behalf of the young.

Opposite is Taurus 28, a woman courted by a love that comes late, our "Late renewal". As a reading aid, the pair sets two returns side by side: feeling reborn in a season thought to be over, and a ruler coming back to a realm that waited for him.

In a chart

A planet or point anywhere from Scorpio 27°00′ up to, but not including, Scorpio 28°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Scorpio 27°57′ reads Scorpio 28, and so does one at Scorpio 27°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Scorpio 29 after Scorpio 27°59′, or back into Scorpio 27 before Scorpio 27°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

The Sabian Assembly

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
