The image
The picture is a woman of the Romani people coming out of a forest into a clearing or onto a road. Behind her is the wood and, implied, the camp or community she comes from; ahead is the open world of settled people. The image shows only the step from cover into view. In 1925 the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler saw this picture for an unseen card, the one marked Gemini 27.
Meaning
The tradition reads the image as a crossing between two worlds. Someone who belongs to a life apart steps into the open and brings with her something of that other life, its knowledge and its freedom. Our keyword is Out of the wild, and our keynote reads it in one line: someone steps from a hidden community into the open with news of it. In a chart one way to read a placement here is as a place where a person moves between a private or unconventional world and the ordinary one, carrying something across. We read the woman as a figure in a picture, not as a type, and say nothing about any people beyond what the image shows.
Lynda Hill reads the degree before as the Karmic Condition and the degree after as the Quest Degree. Before Gemini 27 is Gemini 26, the woods white with frost in winter; after it is Gemini 28, a man's insolvency made public. By her rule the still forest gives up a figure walking out of it, and that emergence into view looks ahead to a failure brought out into the open, two ways of becoming visible. The degree opposite, Sagittarius 27, shows a sculptor shaping stone; as a reading aid it sets a form brought out of rock beside a person coming out of the trees.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Gemini 26°00′ up to, but not including, Gemini 27°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Gemini 26°50′ reads Gemini 27, and so does one at Gemini 26°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Gemini 28 after Gemini 26°59′, or back into Gemini 26 before Gemini 26°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
