The image
The picture is a girl, young and spirited, answering an adult back with assurance: quick, unafraid and pleased with herself. Who she is speaking to and what about are not given. The listener in the picture stays offstage, so the whole scene rests on her voice. Marc Edmund Jones wrote the picture down in San Diego in 1925, as the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler described Gemini 12.
Meaning
Read as a symbol, the girl who talks back is a voice claiming its place. She is not yet grown, and the adults may not like it, but her confidence and wit make her heard. Our keyword is Self-assertion, and our keynote reads it in one line: a young voice insists on being heard, with spirit and wit. The tradition would read a placement here as a place where a person speaks up for themselves, questions authority with humour or nerve, or is learning where boldness serves and where it does not. The image enjoys her spirit without saying she is right; it shows the moment of answering back.
Lynda Hill reads the degree before as the Karmic Condition and the degree after as the Quest Degree. Gemini 11, before it, is a fresh way of meeting life as it really is; Gemini 13, after it, is a master musician seated at the keyboard. By her rule a clear-eyed realism produces a young voice that refuses to be silenced, and that voice looks ahead to the long discipline that turns talent into mastery. Opposite stands Sagittarius 12, a flag that becomes an eagle and the eagle that crows; as a reading aid it sets a symbol that comes alive and proclaims beside a child who proclaims herself.

- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
