Two of Diamonds: two interests joined, and the art of agreement

Meaning

Richmond's Twos join things, and the Two of Diamonds joins interests: an arrangement “very suddenly concluded”, a union of interests, two parties agreeing. His entry is written in the language of gain, which we leave out; what remains is the pairing.

We read the card as partnership and the art of agreement. The tradition sees its people as working best with a partner, resourceful and sociable, quick to see what each side can offer and fond of the back and forth of coming to terms; it names their lesson as trust, since agreements built on fairness serve them better than clever ones.

In the spreads

In the Life Spread the Two of Diamonds sits in the Mars row, Saturn column, after the Four of Clubs, its Moon card. Its path passes the Jack of Spades and the Eight of Clubs, the fixed card at the end of the row, and its Pluto and Result cards are the two red Aces, the Ace of Hearts and the Ace of Diamonds.

It gives to the Six of Clubs and receives from the Ace of Diamonds. Its twelve birthdays reach every sign but Capricorn; 21 March and 19 April are cusps, and an 11 August birth, under Leo, has the Two itself as ruling card.

Life path and karma cards

Birthdays and ruling cards

The ruling card is the card of the life path in the place of the Sun sign's ruling planet; Leo takes the birth card itself and Scorpio two cards. On a date marked cusp the Sun changes sign during the day in some years, so without a birth time both cards apply.

How the schools read it

Olney H. Richmond (1893)

An emblem of solar value 28 and spirit value 13, read through its suit, the harvest gathered in, and its number, a union: one meaning under each of the seven planets, most of them events (p. 130).

Randall and Campbell, Lein, Camp (1947 onward)

Read the birth card as character rather than events. Camp's line adds the life path, the karma cards and the yearly spreads used on this page, and gives the card a nickname, which we do not use.

Card Blueprints and Seven Reflections

On 21 March and 19 April Card Blueprints gives two ruling cards from a fixed table of cusp dates, and Seven Reflections asks for the sign. We compute the Sun and give both cards only when no birth time is known.

Claims about it

• The birth-card formula is a modern shortcut, not Richmond's.

  What the record shows: Run from the 1893 scan for all 366 days, Richmond's own rule gives the formula's card on every one, once a single digit of his printed day table, for the 9th of the month, is read as 5 rather than 4. The formula is his table restated.

• The ruling card follows a fixed table of cusp dates, the same every year.

  What the record shows: The Sun enters a sign on different days across the leap-year cycle and in different time zones, so a fixed table is wrong on some days of some years. We compute the Sun's sign and show both cards only when it changed sign during the birth day and no birth time is known.

• Each suit has an element and a ruling planet.

  What the record shows: No founding text gives the suits elements, and the sources that do disagree with each other. Richmond gives each suit a season and two planets (pp. 27 to 28, 41), which we report as his. We dropped the attributes in October 2026.
