Eight of Spades: strength of will and great staying power

Meaning

Richmond's Eights are power over obstacles, and the Eight of Spades is that power applied to work: “Power to control and carry on profession or labor”, “Ability to succeed against antagonistic circumstances”, “Concentration of forces”.

We read the card as strength of will and great staying power. The tradition sees its people as having deep reserves of determination, capable of hard, sustained effort and of pushing through what would stop others; it names the use of that strength gently, and the sense to know when to stop, as what keeps it from turning into force.

In the spreads

The Eight of Spades sits in the Jupiter row, Saturn column, beside the Ten of Diamonds at the centre of the spread, which is its Moon card. Its path runs on through the two red Aces, the Ace of Hearts and the Ace of Diamonds, into the Saturn row.

It gives to the King of Clubs and receives from the Six of Clubs. Its three birthdays fall one in each of the first three months, under Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, with no cusp.

Life path and karma cards

Read from the Life Spread: the card before the Eight of Spades, then the ten after it, the order running on from the crown line back to the top right. The names of the places are Camp's, used descriptively.

Birthdays and ruling cards

The ruling card is the card of the life path in the place of the Sun sign's ruling planet; Leo takes the birth card itself and Scorpio two cards.

Olney H. Richmond (1893)

An emblem of solar value 47 and spirit value 25, read through its suit, labour, and its number, power over obstacles: one meaning under each of the seven planets, most of them events (p. 168).

Randall and Campbell, Lein, Camp (1947 onward)

Read the birth card as character rather than events. Camp's line adds the life path, the karma cards and the yearly spreads used on this page, and gives the card a nickname, which we do not use.
