Ace of Clubs: a hungry mind, and the partner of the Two of Hearts

Meaning

Every Ace in Richmond's tables is a wish, and the Club's wish is for knowing: “An aspiration for knowledge”, “Desire for much knowledge. Inquisitiveness”. Of all his card entries it is one of the few that read almost as a temperament rather than an event.

We read the Ace of Clubs as a hungry mind with a question to chase. The tradition sees its people as quick and curious, fond of learning, of talking things through and of starting new projects of the mind, and finds their growth in finishing what they start and in keeping the heart in step with the head.

In the spreads

The Ace of Clubs is fourteenth in the natural order and the Two of Hearts second, and every pass of Richmond's rule exchanges them. In the Life Spread the Ace therefore stands second in reading order, in the Mercury row, Venus column, just after the Three of Hearts, its Moon card, and before the Queen of Clubs, its Mercury card. The Two of Hearts is its karma card in both directions, and the pair have no Environment or Displacement cards.

Its eight birthdays run from Gemini to Sagittarius. On 23 September, a cusp date, a birth without a known time takes both the Queen of Clubs, for Virgo, and the Ten of Spades, for Libra; a 27 July birth, under Leo, has the Ace itself as ruling card.

Life path and karma cards

Birthdays and ruling cards

The ruling card is the card of the life path in the place of the Sun sign's ruling planet; Leo takes the birth card itself and Scorpio two cards. On a date marked cusp the Sun changes sign during the day in some years, so without a birth time both cards apply.

How the schools read it

Olney H. Richmond (1893)

An emblem of solar value 14 and spirit value 51, read through its suit, knowledge, and its number, a wish: one meaning under each of the seven planets, most of them events (p. 102).

Randall and Campbell, Lein, Camp (1947 onward)

Read the birth card as character rather than events. Camp's line adds the life path, the karma cards and the yearly spreads used on this page, and gives the card a nickname, which we do not use. Camp counts it among the Family of Seven, with no Environment or Displacement cards.

Card Blueprints and Seven Reflections

On 23 September Card Blueprints gives two ruling cards from a fixed table of cusp dates, and Seven Reflections asks for the sign. We compute the Sun and give both cards only when no birth time is known.
