Four of Diamonds: hopes realised and indecision ended

Meaning

Fours are contentment in Richmond's tables, and the Four of Diamonds is contentment after waiting: “Your hopes will be suddenly realized”, and “Indecision comes to an end”. Its middle line is about gain and is left out here. In his practice such lines were what a spread might show, and they are quoted here as his.

We read the card as steady effort and sound foundations. The tradition sees its people as practical, honest and careful, willing to work patiently for security and to build step by step; their growth is read as balancing caution with generosity and a little room for change.

In the spreads

The Four of Diamonds is the second card of the Neptune row, after the Four of Hearts, its Moon card, so the two Fours stand side by side. Its path runs along the row and then climbs: its Uranus, Neptune and Pluto cards are the three crown cards, the Ten of Clubs, the Eight of Diamonds and the King of Spades, and its Result and Cosmic Lesson are the first two cards of the spread, the Three of Hearts and the Ace of Clubs.

It gives to the Five of Spades and receives from the Five of Hearts. Its twelve birthdays reach every sign but Capricorn; 19 March is a cusp, and a 9 August birth, under Leo, has the Four itself as ruling card.

Life path and karma cards

Birthdays and ruling cards

The ruling card is the card of the life path in the place of the Sun sign's ruling planet; Leo takes the birth card itself and Scorpio two cards. On a date marked cusp the Sun changes sign during the day in some years, so without a birth time both cards apply.

Olney H. Richmond (1893)

An emblem of solar value 30 and spirit value 33, read through its suit, the harvest gathered in, and its number, contentment: one meaning under each of the seven planets, most of them events (p. 134).

Randall and Campbell, Lein, Camp (1947 onward)

Read the birth card as character rather than events. Camp's line adds the life path, the karma cards and the yearly spreads used on this page, and gives the card a nickname, which we do not use.

Card Blueprints and Seven Reflections

On 19 March Card Blueprints gives two ruling cards from a fixed table of cusp dates, and Seven Reflections asks for the sign. We compute the Sun and give both cards only when no birth time is known.
