Seven of Hearts: a heartache that passes, and the patience it teaches

Meaning

Sevens in Richmond's tables are trouble from one direction only, an obstacle in the path, and the Seven of Hearts is the gentlest of them: “A heart ache caused by a friend”, “A trouble easily overcome”. The hurt is real in his wording and it passes. Later writers made every Seven a spiritual test; that is their reading, not his.

We read the card as love that is tested and learns to let be. The tradition sees its people as feeling intensely and expecting much of those they love, and finds their quiet strength in coming, over time, to hold relationships more lightly.

In the spreads

The Seven of Hearts is the first card of the Venus row, at its right-hand end, under the Mercury column. Before it, at the far left of the Mercury row, is the Ace of Spades, its Moon card; and the Ace of Spades is also the card that gives to it as a karma card, since the deal has put the Ace in the Seven's natural seventh place. The card it gives to is the Eight of Hearts, the next card of its suit.

Its path runs along the Venus row: the Seven of Diamonds, a semi-fixed card, then the Five of Spades and the Jack of Hearts, which never moves. Its four birthdays fall under Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn; 28 October takes two ruling cards, the Jack of Hearts and the King of Diamonds.

The ruling card is the card of the life path in the place of the Sun sign's ruling planet; Leo takes the birth card itself and Scorpio two cards.

Olney H. Richmond (1893)

Randall and Campbell, Lein, Camp (1947 onward)

Read the birth card as character rather than events. Camp's line adds the life path, the karma cards and the yearly spreads used on this page, and gives the card a nickname, which we do not use.
