Nine of Diamonds: letting go, and the freedom it brings

Meaning

Nines in Richmond's tables are disappointment at the centre of the path, and in Diamonds the disappointment is in what effort returns. His lines are about gain and loss and are not quoted; the shape of the card is effort that gives back less than was hoped. The modern reading of the Nines as universal giving softens him.

We read the card as letting go, and the freedom it brings. The tradition sees its people as generous, sometimes giving or letting go too easily, and as learning through endings in what they value; a relaxed relationship with possessions is read as suiting them better than holding on.

In the spreads

In the Life Spread the Nine of Diamonds sits in the Uranus row, Mars column, after the Jack of Clubs, its Moon card. Its path runs along the Uranus row, the Seven of Spades, the Two of Clubs, the King of Clubs, the Jack of Diamonds, and down into the Neptune row.

It gives to the Queen of Diamonds and receives from the Five of Diamonds, so both its karma cards are of its own suit. Its nine birthdays, from 18 January to 2 September, have no cusp date; a 4 August birth, under Leo, has the Nine itself as ruling card.

The ruling card is the card of the life path in the place of the Sun sign's ruling planet; Leo takes the birth card itself and Scorpio two cards.

How the schools read it

Olney H. Richmond (1893)

An emblem of solar value 35 and spirit value 83, read through its suit, the harvest gathered in, and its number, disappointment: one meaning under each of the seven planets, most of them events (p. 144).

Randall and Campbell, Lein, Camp (1947 onward)

Read the birth card as character rather than events. Camp's line adds the life path, the karma cards and the yearly spreads used on this page, and gives the card a nickname, which we do not use.
