Queen of Clubs: a sharp mind that organises and advises

Meaning

Richmond's Queens are women of their suit, and the Queen of Clubs is the bright one: “A smart, lively lady, intelligent and quick witted”, “A lady of strong will force”. The figure belongs to the reading; the card's people may be anyone.

We read the card as a sharp mind that organises and advises. The tradition sees its people as well informed and quick to see what needs doing, natural organisers and counsellors, happiest when what they know helps someone else; it suggests that softening a sharp tongue, and listening before advising, rounds them out.

In the spreads

The Queen of Clubs is the third card of the Life Spread, in the Mercury row under the Mars column, behind the Ace of Clubs, its Moon card, and the Three of Hearts. It gives to the Three of Hearts, the natural-order card of its place, and receives from the Ten of Diamonds.

Its path runs along the Mercury row, the Ten of Spades, the Five of Clubs, the Three of Diamonds, the Ace of Spades, and into the Venus row, ending on the Jack of Hearts as Pluto card and the Nine of Clubs as Result. Its birthdays reach every sign but Capricorn; 20 May is a cusp, and a 14 August birth, under Leo, has the Queen herself as ruling card.

Birthdays and ruling cards

The ruling card is the card of the life path in the place of the Sun sign's ruling planet; Leo takes the birth card itself and Scorpio two cards. On a date marked cusp the Sun changes sign during the day in some years, so without a birth time both cards apply.

Olney H. Richmond (1893)

An emblem of solar value 25 and spirit value 72, read through its suit, knowledge, and its number, a woman of the suit: one meaning under each of the seven planets, most of them events (p. 124).

Randall and Campbell, Lein, Camp (1947 onward)

Read the birth card as character rather than events. Camp's line adds the life path, the karma cards and the yearly spreads used on this page, and gives the card a nickname, which we do not use.

Card Blueprints and Seven Reflections

On 20 May Card Blueprints gives two ruling cards from a fixed table of cusp dates, and Seven Reflections asks for the sign. We compute the Sun and give both cards only when no birth time is known.

  What the record shows: The Sun enters a sign on different days across the leap-year cycle and in different time zones, so a fixed table is wrong on some days of some years. We compute the Sun's sign and show both cards only when it changed sign during the birth day and no birth time is known.
