King of Clubs: authority that comes from knowing

Meaning

Richmond's King of Clubs is a “Smart, lively and witty man”, “An intelligent reasoner and powerful speaker”. Elsewhere in the book he calls it “the king of wisdom” and finds on the printed card the winged globe of Mercury, an emblem he believed had survived from Egypt; the English court figures in fact descend from fifteenth-century French designs.

We read the card as authority that comes from knowing. The tradition sees its people as leading with knowledge, experience and a persuasive way with words, often the person others consult, and holding strong views firmly; listening as well as they speak is read as what makes that authority both wiser and warmer.

In the spreads

In the Life Spread the King of Clubs sits in the Uranus row and the Uranus column, a double Uranus card, after the Two of Clubs, its Moon card. Its path runs through the Jack of Diamonds and down into the Neptune row, and its Result and Cosmic Lesson cards are the first two crown cards, the Ten of Clubs and the Eight of Diamonds.

It gives to the Two of Spades and receives from the Eight of Spades. Its twelve birthdays reach every sign but Capricorn; 21 April and 19 May are cusps, and a 13 August birth, under Leo, has the King himself as ruling card.

Birthdays and ruling cards

The ruling card is the card of the life path in the place of the Sun sign's ruling planet; Leo takes the birth card itself and Scorpio two cards. On a date marked cusp the Sun changes sign during the day in some years, so without a birth time both cards apply.

How the schools read it

Olney H. Richmond (1893)

An emblem of solar value 26 and spirit value 82, read through its suit, knowledge, and its number, a mature man of the suit: one meaning under each of the seven planets, most of them events (p. 126).

Randall and Campbell, Lein, Camp (1947 onward)

Read the birth card as character rather than events. Camp's line adds the life path, the karma cards and the yearly spreads used on this page, and gives the card a nickname, which we do not use.

Card Blueprints and Seven Reflections

On 21 April and 19 May Card Blueprints gives two ruling cards from a fixed table of cusp dates, and Seven Reflections asks for the sign. We compute the Sun and give both cards only when no birth time is known.

Claims about it

• Double-headed court cards were new in 1893, and the court figures keep Egyptian emblems.

  What the record shows: Double-headed courts were patented in England in 1799. The English court figures descend from fifteenth-century French designs, not from Egypt.

• The ruling card follows a fixed table of cusp dates, the same every year.

  What the record shows: The Sun enters a sign on different days across the leap-year cycle and in different time zones, so a fixed table is wrong on some days of some years. We compute the Sun's sign and show both cards only when it changed sign during the birth day and no birth time is known.
