Three of Spades: two courses, both requiring much work

Meaning

Richmond's Threes are a place where two ways open, and in Spades both ways are hard: “A case arises suddenly where you must decide between two courses”, two ways open, “both requiring much work”. It is the working counterpart of the hesitant Three of Hearts.

We read the card as many tasks and many talents. The tradition sees its people as versatile and capable, inclined to juggle several kinds of work at once and to drive themselves hard; it finds that choosing fewer commitments, and leaving room for rest, lets their talents come through.

In the spreads

The Three of Spades sits at the middle of the Saturn row, under the Jupiter column, after the Three of Clubs, its Moon card, so two Threes stand side by side. Its path runs through the Nine of Hearts, a semi-fixed card, the Seven of Clubs and the Five of Diamonds, and on along the Uranus row.

It gives to the Six of Diamonds and receives from the Jack of Diamonds, which is also its Cosmic Lesson. Its six birthdays, from 11 January to 1 June, have no cusp.

Life path and karma cards

Birthdays and ruling cards

The ruling card is the card of the life path in the place of the Sun sign's ruling planet; Leo takes the birth card itself and Scorpio two cards.

An emblem of solar value 42 and spirit value 64, read through its suit, labour, and its number, indecision: one meaning under each of the seven planets, most of them events (p. 158).

Randall and Campbell, Lein, Camp (1947 onward)

Read the birth card as character rather than events. Camp's line adds the life path, the karma cards and the yearly spreads used on this page, and gives the card a nickname, which we do not use.
