Eight of Clubs: power in knowledge, fixed at the end of Richmond's cross

Meaning

Richmond's Eights are power over obstacles, and in Clubs the power is intellectual: “Rapid gaining of knowledge”, “Strength and courage. Overcoming of obstacles to advancement”. In his great cross of the solar spread he calls the card “power in knowledge”.

We read it as strength of mind and staying power. The tradition sees its people as able to concentrate hard and hold a line of thought through difficulty, persuasive and determined, good at mastering a subject; it warns that the same firmness can harden, and keeps their strength useful by a willingness to be wrong.

In the spreads

The Eight of Clubs is 21st in the natural order and 21st in the Life Spread, at the far left of the Mars row, under the Neptune column, and Richmond's rule leaves it there at every pass. Its karma cards would be itself, so it has none; Camp gives it no Environment or Displacement card; some readers pair it instead with the other two fixed cards.

Its Moon card is the Jack of Spades and its path runs along the Jupiter row: the Six of Diamonds, the Four of Spades, the Ten of Hearts, the Ten of Diamonds. Its birthdays run from Aries to Sagittarius; 22 June is a cusp, and an 18 August birth, under Leo, has the Eight itself as ruling card.

Fixed beside the cross

Richmond noticed in 1893 that his dealing rule never moves three cards, and built a cross on them: the Jack of Hearts at the centre, read as Christ, and “the king of spades, a representative of the kingly power, and the 8 of clubs”, which “remain throughout all the quadrates in the same positions”. He called the Eight “power in knowledge”. The arithmetic is exact; the cross is his theology, quoted as his.

Life path and karma cards

Read from the Life Spread: the card before the Eight of Clubs, then the ten after it, the order running on from the crown line back to the top right. The names of the places are Camp's, used descriptively.

Birthdays and ruling cards

The ruling card is the card of the life path in the place of the Sun sign's ruling planet; Leo takes the birth card itself and Scorpio two cards. On a date marked cusp the Sun changes sign during the day in some years, so without a birth time both cards apply.

How the schools read it

Olney H. Richmond (1893)

An emblem of solar value 21 and spirit value 32, read through its suit, knowledge, and its number, power over obstacles: one meaning under each of the seven planets, most of them events (p. 116).

Randall and Campbell, Lein, Camp (1947 onward)

Read the birth card as character rather than events. Camp's line adds the life path, the karma cards and the yearly spreads used on this page, and gives the card a nickname, which we do not use. Camp counts it among the Family of Seven, with no Environment or Displacement cards.

Some readers

Give each fixed card the other two fixed cards as companions or karma cards. Seven Reflections and Card Blueprints give it none, as we do.
