Meaning
Full Reduction is the table of modern numerology. The alphabet is cut into rows of nine, so A, J and S are 1, B, K and T are 2, and so on to I and R, which are 9; nothing is larger than 9. In numerology the table gives the name numbers, the Expression from all the letters, the Soul Urge from the vowels, the Personality from the consonants. The gematria sites took the same table as one of their ciphers and called it Reduction. Our chart computes it from the same code as the Numerology chart, so the two always agree.
The school calls the table Pythagorean. No ancient source has Pythagoras or his followers give letters values, and the repeating 1 to 9 appears in print with the American numerologists of the early 20th century; the name is a tribute, not a pedigree.
How it is counted
GEMATRIA: G 7 + E 5 + M 4 + A 1 + T 2 + R 9 + I 9 + A 1 = 38; reduced to 11, then to 2. ALPHABET: A 1 + L 3 + P 7 + H 8 + A 1 + B 2 + E 5 + T 2 = 29; reduced to 11, then to 2.
Because each letter is at most 9, the totals stay small and their digital roots are the point; a name's Full Reduction total always has the same digital root as its English Ordinal total, since the two tables differ only by multiples of 9.
The Hebrew small count
The Hebrew tradition has a method that looks similar. Mispar Katan, the small count, takes each letter's standard value and drops its zeros, so yod (10), qof (100) and alef (1) are all 1. The resemblance is real and the history is not shared: Mispar Katan reduces a numeral alphabet, while Full Reduction cycles an alphabet that never was one.
