Meaning
Offset 36 starts the alphabet at 36 instead of 1: A is 36, B 37, and so on to Z at 61. Every letter is worth its English Ordinal value plus 35, so a word's total is its ordinal total plus 35 times the number of its letters. Long words get large totals simply for being long.
Why 36? Add the numbers 1 to 36 and the sum is 666, the number of the beast in Revelation: 666 is the 36th triangular number, and Gematrinator gives that as the reason for the starting point. The sites call the cipher "Satanic" for the same reason. That is their name and their explanation; ours names the cipher by what it does, and we show it only behind "more ciphers", as the owner decided on 13 October 2026.
There is no occult tradition behind it that we could find. Like the other community ciphers it was named on the calculator sites of the 2010s, and the practitioner Joachim Bartoll's account of the ciphers says as much about the community's habits as about the cipher.
How it is counted
GEMATRIA: G 42 + E 40 + M 48 + A 36 + T 55 + R 53 + I 44 + A 36 = 354; reduced to 12, then to 3. ALPHABET: A 36 + L 47 + P 51 + H 43 + A 36 + B 37 + E 40 + T 55 = 345; reduced to 12, then to 3.
GEMATRIA's ordinal total is 74; eight letters add 8 × 35 = 280; 74 + 280 = 354. A number under this cipher is the ordinal in disguise.
What this page leaves out
We do not say what any total under this cipher means, 666 included, and we do not compute its reverse version, which our old chart showed.
What a shift does to matches
Because every letter gains the same 35, two words of the same length that match under the English Ordinal also match here, and two words of different lengths can match here only if their ordinal totals differ by a multiple of 35. The cipher therefore finds no pairs of its own: its matches are ordinal matches, sorted by word length.

Claims about it
-
This cipher is an old occult method.
falseWhat the record shows: It is the ordinal shifted by 35, named on the calculator sites of the 2010s. No occult tradition behind it was found.
-
Two words or names with the same value under this cipher are connected.
falseWhat the record shows: Equal values are what any table of this kind produces in quantity; the tradition reads them together as a way of interpreting a text.
-
Totals under this cipher show that news events are planned by their numbers.
falseWhat the record shows: A search with dozens of ciphers and millions of phrases always finds a match; fact-checkers have shown it. Nothing on this site reads events, dates or news by number.
