Meaning
Reverse Ordinal is the English Ordinal read from the other end: Z is 1, Y is 2, A is 26. The English-gematria community likes to give every word at least two readings, and the backward count is the simplest second one. Gematrinator opens with four ciphers, the ordinal, its reduction and the two reverses, and almost every calculator since has followed it. That is the whole of the cipher's history: it is a convention of the websites of the 2010s, with no tradition behind it.
Our old chart showed reverse versions of seven ciphers as if they were all equal. In October 2026 we kept only the two that every calculator shows, this one and Reverse Reduction, and dropped the other five as noise.
How it is counted
GEMATRIA: G 20 + E 22 + M 14 + A 26 + T 7 + R 9 + I 18 + A 26 = 142; reduced to 7. ALPHABET: A 26 + L 15 + P 11 + H 19 + A 26 + B 25 + E 22 + T 7 = 151; reduced to 7.
Since a letter's ordinal and reverse values always add to 27, a word's two totals add to 27 times its number of letters: GEMATRIA has eight letters, and 74 + 142 = 216 = 8 × 27. One total gives the other; the second reading adds no information.
The Hebrew mirror
Hebrew has an old mirror of its own. Atbash exchanges the first letter with the last, the second with the second-last, and takes the numeral value of the result; the Book of Jeremiah uses it to write Babel as Sheshach. Atbash is a substitution between letters of a numeral alphabet, and it is attested in scripture; the Reverse Ordinal is a count, and it is attested on websites.
The chart shows the backward count beside the forward one so that a total quoted on another site can be found and checked here, and for no other reason; it does not treat the second reading as a second opinion.

- EsoTerrier
- Kept in the core six because the calculators show it; labelled as a modern mirror.
Claims about it
-
This cipher goes back to antiquity or to a source older than the gematria websites.
falseWhat the record shows: It is a coinage of the online English-gematria community of the 2000s and 2010s; no older source was found.
-
Two words or names with the same value under this cipher are connected.
falseWhat the record shows: Equal values are what any table of this kind produces in quantity; the tradition reads them together as a way of interpreting a text.
-
Totals under this cipher show that news events are planned by their numbers.
falseWhat the record shows: A search with dozens of ciphers and millions of phrases always finds a match; fact-checkers have shown it. Nothing on this site reads events, dates or news by number.
