Squares: each letter's place multiplied by itself

The Squares cipher is the one that gives each letter the square of its place in the alphabet: A 1, B 4, C 9, up to Z 676. Its totals are the largest of any cipher we compute, and it is a website coinage of the 2010s with no tradition behind it.

Meaning

The Squares cipher multiplies each letter's place in the alphabet by itself: A is 1, B 4, C 9, J 100, and Z, the 26th letter, 676. The values spread so widely that one late letter outweighs a whole word of early ones: a single Y (625) is worth more than A to K together (506).

It is one of the arithmetic ciphers listed on Gematrinator in the 2010s, beside the triangular and prime numbers, and nothing older was found. Its totals are so much larger than every other cipher's that our old chart, which drew the ciphers as bars on one scale, was in effect a chart of this one; since October 2026 the chart lists totals instead.

How it is counted

GEMATRIA: G 49 + E 25 + M 169 + A 1 + T 400 + R 324 + I 81 + A 1 = 1,050; reduced to 6. ALPHABET: A 1 + L 144 + P 256 + H 64 + A 1 + B 4 + E 25 + T 400 = 895; reduced to 22, then to 4.

Every square ends in 0, 1, 4, 5, 6 or 9, and the digital root of a square is always 1, 4, 7 or 9; the cipher's totals inherit patterns from the arithmetic, not from the words.

What this page leaves out

We do not compute the reverse form, dropped with the other mirrors, and we give no reading of a total. A large number here says only that a word has many letters from the end of the alphabet.

How it relates to the other ciphers

Squares, Trigonal and the English Ordinal are tied together by simple arithmetic: a word's Squares total is twice its Trigonal total minus its Ordinal total. For GEMATRIA that is twice 562 less 74, which is 1,050. The cipher adds a different scale, not a different view of the word, and a total that seems striking here can usually be traced to the same letters in the plain alphabet count.

Claims about it

  • This cipher goes back to antiquity or to a source older than the gematria websites.

    false

What the record shows: It is a coinage of the online English-gematria community of the 2000s and 2010s; no older source was found.

  • A larger total means a weightier word.

    false

What the record shows: The size of a total under this cipher reflects how many late letters a word has and nothing else.

  • Totals under this cipher show that news events are planned by their numbers.

    false

What the record shows: A search with dozens of ciphers and millions of phrases always finds a match; fact-checkers have shown it. Nothing on this site reads events, dates or news by number.
