Life Path 1 in numerology: the Leader

Life Path 1, which we call the Leader, is one of the twelve Life Path numbers drawn from a birth date, and the modern school reads it as independence, initiative and the will to go first. It is reached when the reduced month, day and year add up to 10, 19, 28, 37, 46 or 55, on about 11.1 percent of days from 1900 to 2099.

Meaning

In the modern school the Life Path 1 is the number of the beginning: the first step, the single will, the person who goes first. Its lesson, as the school frames it, is self-reliance and leadership; its strengths are initiative, decisiveness and the nerve to act without waiting for permission, and its difficulties are stubbornness, impatience and a reluctance to need anyone. Decoz and Cheiro agree on the headline, ambition and a wish to lead, though Cheiro was describing people born on the 1st, 10th, 19th and 28th of a month, not a Life Path.

The older number lore says something different. In the chapter Agrippa devotes to unity, one is not a leader but a source: the fountain of all numbers, without parts, the beginning and end of everything, which the Pythagoreans, he says, called concord and friendship. The modern reading took the "first" and dropped the "whole".

How the number is reached

The reduced month, day and year can add up to 10, 19, 28, 37, 46 or 55, and every one of these comes down to 1. The smallest possible total is 3, so the 1 is never reached directly. Born on 4 January 1985, a person adds 1 + 4 + 5 = 10, and 10 gives 1; born on 22 November 1993, they add 11 + 22 + 22 = 55, then 10, then 1.

One route carries a karmic debt. When the total is 19, as for 11 March 1985 (3 + 11 + 5 = 19, then 10, then 1), the school writes the number 19/1 and reads the debt 19 as a lesson about independence that does not shut other people out. Decoz reads a debt only at this compound stage and from the day of birth, and so do we. The idea is a twentieth-century American one, and the school's belief, not a fact about anyone's past.

Over every day from 1900 to 2099 the 1 falls to 8,114 days in 73,049, 11.11 percent; from 1926 to 2025, to 4,057 days in 36,525, also 11.11 percent. Adding every digit of the date in a row, or reducing each part to one digit first, gives the same final 1 on most dates but different compounds.

The planet line, as history

Agrippa's rule for the numbers of names, divided by nine, gives the Sun to a remainder of one, and also to four. Heydon copied the rule in 1662, Sepharial printed it again in 1911 and called it without foundation, and Cheiro kept the Sun for 1 in his own list, giving 4 to Uranus. These are the sources of the "ruling planet" that sites attach to the number; the Life Path itself has no planet in any of them.
