Meaning
Kether is the Tree's starting point and its least describable sphere. Jewish Kabbalah and the Hermetic writers alike treat it as the first emanation, so near the unknowable source that it has no qualities of its own, only being. Its planetary sphere is not a planet at all: the old tables give it the Primum Mobile, the outermost turning of the heavens that sets the others moving, which the Hebrew name, Rashith ha-Gilgalim, calls the first swirlings.

On the Tree
Kether heads the Middle Pillar, which the Golden Dawn called the Pillar of Mildness, with Tiphareth, Yesod and Malkuth below it. Three paths leave it: Aleph to Chokmah, Beth to Binah, and Gimel straight down the middle to Tiphareth, across the region some diagrams mark as Da'at. Every tarot trump belongs to a path, so no card belongs to Kether itself: a person whose personality or soul card is the Fool, the Magician or the High Priestess has a path that touches the Crown. The four Aces, the Minor Arcana cards of its number, are the Golden Dawn's link between Kether and the tarot; our chart does not use them.
In the Thirty-Two Paths of Wisdom, the short text printed beside the Sefer Yetzirah in 1642, Kether is the first path, "the Admirable or Hidden Intelligence" in Westcott's English.
The names and the tables
The tables the Golden Dawn inherited from Agrippa give Kether the divine name Eheieh, "I am" or "I will be", the archangel Metatron and the choir of the Chayoth ha-Qadesh, the Holy Living Creatures. We give the names in Latin letters only: in Jewish practice the written names of God are not erased or used as ornament. Our old tables gave Kether a choir of their own invention and a demon taken from a planetary list; both are gone. Later lore makes Metatron the patriarch Enoch, taken up alive and turned to fire; that story is lore, and the system page tells it as such.
All of these attributions belong to the Hermetic Qabalah, which took the Tree from Jewish Kabbalah and added the tarot and the tables. Kabbalah reads Keter as a divine attribute and has neither.
