Meaning
Malkuth is the Kingdom: the world of matter, the senses and the body, the last sephirah and the one a person starts from. The Hermetic writers do not rank it lowest in worth; they call it the place where the work of all the others becomes real. Its sphere is not a planet but the elements, Cholem Yesodoth, which our old engine shortened to the Earth. In our own words, Malkuth is the here and now: the body, the work, the home and the circumstances a person actually has. Nothing on this page says what those circumstances will be.
On the Tree
Malkuth sits at the foot of the Middle Pillar, below Yesod. Three paths reach it: Qoph from Netzach, the Moon's path; Shin from Hod, the path of Judgement; and Tav from Yesod, the World's. The Golden Dawn's course of study began here and climbed the Tree, so the World's path was the first a student worked on. No trump belongs to Malkuth itself: the Golden Dawn gives it the four Tens and, through the last letter of the four-letter name, the Princesses and the suit of Pentacles. A card numbered 10 goes on its own path, Kaph, not here.
The Thirty-Two Paths of Wisdom calls it "the Resplendent Intelligence" in Westcott's English.
Two divine names, and other variants
The sources give Malkuth two divine names. Agrippa, Mathers and 777 give Adonai Melekh, "the Lord and King"; Dion Fortune gives both that and Adonai ha-Aretz, "Lord of the Earth", and our chart shows Adonai ha-Aretz. Both are given here, in Latin letters only. The archangel is Sandalphon in the Golden Dawn's tables, but Metatron in Agrippa and in Mathers' table, which the Golden Dawn gives to Kether instead. The choir is the Ashim, the Souls of Fire, where Mathers' text has the Kerubim. Later lore makes Sandalphon the twin of Metatron, or the prophet Elijah taken up; that is told as lore.
Jewish Kabbalah, where the Tree comes from, reads Malkhut as kingship and the divine presence in the world, and links it with David; the elements, the archangels and the tarot are the Hermetic Qabalah's.
