The image
A path winds up a mountainside, and people are climbing it on pilgrimage: slowly, in single file or in small groups, toward a shrine or a summit that matters to them. The picture is about the climbing itself, the effort chosen as an offering, rather than the arrival. In 1925 the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler saw this picture for an unseen card, the one marked Capricorn 27.
Meaning

A pilgrimage turns belief into movement. The path is hard on purpose; the difficulty is part of what is given. We read the degree as the readiness to make a long effort for something that cannot be measured by its practical return. One way to see it is in commitments kept over years, studies that take a lifetime, or any discipline in which the journey is understood as the point. Mountains are also places of perspective, so the image can be read as climbing toward a wider view of one's own life. The tradition reads such a picture as a description of a quality and attaches no promise to the climb.
Lynda Hill counts the degree behind as what a placement brings and the degree in front as what it looks for. Before it comes Capricorn 26, a water sprite, all lightness and play; here the mood turns to purpose and endurance. After it comes Capricorn 28, a great cage full of birds, where the open mountain path gives way to many lives kept within one set of bars.
As a reading aid, the opposite degree is Cancer 27, a canyon in the grip of a storm. Both are landscapes of rock and height; in the canyon the force is wild and contained, on the mountain it is human and chosen, and the pair sets turbulence beside steady purpose.

A planet or point anywhere from Capricorn 26°00′ up to, but not including, Capricorn 27°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Capricorn 26°20′ reads Capricorn 27, and so does one at Capricorn 26°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Capricorn 28 after Capricorn 26°59′, or back into Capricorn 26 before Capricorn 26°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
