The image

A canoe moves across the water with a crew of Native men. Some pull at the paddles; the movement of the others turns into a dance, the war dance, performed on the move. The boat keeps going while the rhythm of the dance runs through it.

The dance is read here as a picture of shared energy and tradition, not of any fight.

Meaning

Our keyword is "Effort and excitement", and our keynote: steady work and roused feeling share one vessel.

Rowing is repetitive and disciplined; dancing is the release of feeling in movement. The image puts them in the same boat, and that is what we read in it: the capacity to keep working while the blood is up, or to turn effort into something close to celebration. A crew that sings as it rows often rows better. The image can also be read as tension, the risk that excitement unbalances the craft, and the tradition leaves room for both readings. A degree picture describes a quality; how a person carries it is theirs to find.

Following Lynda Hill, the image can be set between the one that precedes it, as background, and the one that follows, as goal. Before this one is Capricorn 4, a group climbing into a big canoe, so the boarding gives way to motion. After it comes Capricorn 6, a dark arch with ten logs laid at its base, where the energy of the voyage meets a threshold not yet crossed.

As a reading aid, the opposite degree is Cancer 5, an image of a train striking a motor car, read only as a picture of a smaller force meeting a larger one. Set beside the canoe, it shows energy without coordination, where the canoe shows energy held together by a shared rhythm.

A planet or point anywhere from Capricorn 4°00′ up to, but not including, Capricorn 5°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Capricorn 4°46′ reads Capricorn 5, and so does one at Capricorn 4°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Capricorn 6 after Capricorn 4°59′, or back into Capricorn 4 before Capricorn 4°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
