The image
The picture is a collision. A train, heavy and fixed to its rails, meets a motor car that is lighter and free to go where its driver chooses, and the train does not stop. The line gives no place, no hour and no people. Before October 2026 our own table printed, for this degree, a line that is not a Sabian image of any degree at all; the image above is the one that belongs here.
Meaning
The tradition reads a degree image as a picture that stands for something, which matters with a picture as stark as this one. Our keyword is Collision with the larger force, and our keynote says that private impulse that ignores a greater momentum is destroyed by it. The contrast is between two kinds of motion. The car goes where its driver points it; the train goes where the rails go, carrying a weight that cannot turn aside. Read as a symbol, the image is about choices made as though the larger movements around them did not exist: a plan that takes no account of the timetable. One way to see a placement here is as the lesson of reading the tracks before crossing them.
Lynda Hill reads the degree behind a placement as its background and the degree ahead as the direction it takes. Behind this one lies Cancer 4, the cat and the mouse arguing as if their weights were equal; ahead lies Cancer 6, game birds lining their nests with feathers. By her rule the argument that ignored a difference in force comes to its sharpest form here, and the next degree turns to shelter and preparation, as if the answer to a hard meeting were a softer nest. The opposite degree, Capricorn 5, keyword Effort and excitement, shows a canoe crew rowing and dancing as they go, and can be set beside this one as a reading aid: energy carried by a group that moves together, against energy that runs alone into something larger.

A planet or point anywhere from Cancer 4°00′ up to, but not including, Cancer 5°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Cancer 4°46′ reads Cancer 5, and so does one at Cancer 4°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Cancer 6 after Cancer 4°59′, or back into Cancer 4 before Cancer 4°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.
- Dane Rudhyar (1973)
- Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
