The image
The picture is a single moment and a single side. Something dark drops all at once over the right shoulder; the line itself is not sure whether it is a shadow or a cloak, and that uncertainty belongs to the image. A shadow has no weight and comes from something passing between a person and the light; a cloak has weight and is put on by someone's hand. The line shows neither the source nor the face of the person.
Meaning
Read as the tradition reads its images, the falling shadow is a symbol, and it is described here as an image only, never as a warning. Our keyword is Sudden shadow, and our keynote says that something dark falls on one side without warning. The doubt between shadow and cloak is the useful part. One way to read a placement in this degree is as sensitivity to sudden changes of mood or atmosphere, the moment when a bright room seems to dim on one side, and as the question that follows: is this something passing across the light, or a mantle someone has laid on me, a role or a responsibility? The right side is often read in symbol as the side of action, so the dark falls where a person would reach out.
Lynda Hill's rule reads the previous degree as the ground a placement grows from and the next degree as the direction it takes. The ground here is Cancer 24, three people sharing a sunlit plot facing south; the direction is Cancer 26, people reading at ease on sofas in a comfortable home. By her rule full sun is followed by a shadow on one shoulder, and the shadow by a retreat indoors, to comfort and to books. As a reading aid, the opposite degree, Capricorn 25, shows a dealer in Oriental rugs, someone who handles heavy, deep-coloured cloth as a trade, beside this degree's single piece of dark cloth, or shadow, falling unasked.

A planet or point anywhere from Cancer 24°00′ up to, but not including, Cancer 25°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Cancer 24°06′ reads Cancer 25, and so does one at Cancer 24°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Cancer 26 after Cancer 24°59′, or back into Cancer 24 before Cancer 24°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
