The image
The picture is a quiet room. Several people have settled onto sofas, at their ease, each with something to read, and the house around them is comfortable: warm, furnished, unhurried. The line does not say what they read, whether they talk, or what time of day it is. It gives the posture and the setting: bodies at rest, minds busy, in a home that makes both easy.
Meaning
The tradition reads degree images as symbols, and this one is a symbol of comfort put to the use of the mind. Our keyword is Cultivated leisure, and our keynote says that comfort and quiet are turned toward knowledge. The look of the house matters less than what it allows. Ease here is not idleness; the people are reading, and the soft furniture is what lets them read for hours. One way to read a placement in this degree is as an appetite for learning that grows best in calm, settled surroundings, and as an appreciation of the home as a place for thought as well as rest. The image can also be read for its limits: a sofa is a fine place to read about the world and a poor place to meet it.
Lynda Hill reads the degrees beside a placement as its context, the one before as background and the one after as aim. Before this one comes Cancer 25, a sudden shadow or cloak across the right shoulder; after it comes Cancer 27, a canyon in the grip of a storm. By her rule the moment of sudden dark leads indoors to quiet and books, and from that sheltered room the next degree opens onto weather raging between rock walls, comfort set between two pictures of disturbance. The opposite degree, Capricorn 26, read beside it as an aid, is a sprite of the water: a spirit of moving, untamed water, beside a room where everything is still, dry and safely held.

A planet or point anywhere from Cancer 25°00′ up to, but not including, Cancer 26°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Cancer 25°43′ reads Cancer 26, and so does one at Cancer 25°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Cancer 27 after Cancer 25°59′, or back into Cancer 25 before Cancer 25°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree.
