A storm trapped and roaring in a narrow canyon

The image

The picture is a landscape in uproar. A canyon, deep and narrow with steep rock on both sides, is in the grip of a storm: rain driving down, wind funnelled between the walls, water gathering fast in the bottom. The line names no traveller and no shelter. The walls are the key: in open country a storm spreads out, but in a canyon it is squeezed, and its noise and force come back off the rock.

Meaning

Read as a symbol, which is how the tradition reads every degree image, the storm in the canyon is about force held in by narrow sides. Our keyword is Confined violence, and our keynote says that powerful emotion rages within narrow walls. The picture does not judge the storm; storms pass, and canyons are carved by the water that runs through them. One way to read a placement in this degree is as feeling that is strong and has little room, the intensity of a passion that cannot spread out, and as the slow shaping such pressure can do over time. Another way to see it is as a reminder to look for the open ground where the same storm would be less fierce.

On Lynda Hill's rule the storm has a background one degree back and a heading one degree on. Behind this one is Cancer 26, people reading at ease on sofas in a comfortable home; ahead is Cancer 28, Pocahontas in our own time. By her rule the calm of the sheltered room gives way to a storm between rock walls, and the storm in turn gives way to a story of crossing between two peoples, as if strong feeling, once it had run its course, looked for a bridge. As a reading aid, the opposite degree, Capricorn 27, shows a pilgrimage up a mountain: people climbing slowly toward a height by choice, beside this deep, narrow place where the weather has taken hold.

A planet or point anywhere from Cancer 26°00′ up to, but not including, Cancer 27°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Cancer 26°20′ reads Cancer 27, and so does one at Cancer 26°59′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Cancer 28 after Cancer 26°59′, or back into Cancer 26 before Cancer 26°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.

Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
