Rabbits dressed up as people, out on parade

The image

The picture belongs with children's books and old comic postcards: rabbits wearing clothes and walking in a parade. The line does not say what they wear or what the parade celebrates, only that the animals have taken on human dress and human order. Part of the charm is how little it suits them; a rabbit in a coat is still a rabbit. Our old table, until October 2026, gave this degree a line found at no degree of the Sabian set; the rabbits are the picture that belongs here.

Meaning

The Sabian tradition reads a degree image as a symbol, and this one is half a joke and half a question about manners. Our keyword is Playing at dignity, and our keynote says that simple creatures imitate the forms of a higher order. The parade is serious to the rabbits and comic to anyone watching, and both views are true at once. One way to read a placement here is as the urge to learn the forms of a wider world by copying them, wearing the clothes before the role fits. Another is gentler: imitation is how the young learn, and a parade is a way of belonging to something bigger than one's own burrow.

Lynda Hill reads a placement against its neighbours, the earlier as background and the later as heading. Before this degree comes Cancer 7, moonlight and two fairies, a hidden and delicate world; after it comes Cancer 9, a tiny girl with no clothes on trying to grab a fish from the water. By her rule the private night world steps out in borrowed costume here, and in the next degree all costume falls away and a child reaches into the water with nothing on at all. As a reading aid, the opposite degree, Capricorn 8, shows birds singing gladly indoors: creatures at ease inside a human home, where the rabbits have brought human clothes outdoors and are still getting used to them.

A planet or point anywhere from Cancer 7°00′ up to, but not including, Cancer 8°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Cancer 7°37′ reads Cancer 8, and so does one at Cancer 7°57′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Cancer 9 after Cancer 7°59′, or back into Cancer 7 before Cancer 7°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. Marc Edmund Jones (1953)

Gives the degree a symbol line, a commentary, a one-word keyword and a positive and a negative reading. We quote none of it.

Dane Rudhyar (1973)

Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.

Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)

Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
