The image
A dealer stands among rugs: stacked, hung, unrolled on the floor, each woven by hand in patterns that may take months to finish and that belong to long traditions of design. The dealer knows where each came from and what went into it. The picture is of accumulated skill, other people's work assembled in one room. Elsie Wheeler described the picture in 1925, and Marc Edmund Jones pencilled it on the card for Capricorn 25.

A rug carries the work of many hands and many years, and its patterns are passed down rather than invented from nothing. The dealer's part is to recognise quality, to keep the pieces well and to place them with people who can appreciate them. We read the degree as the value of connoisseurship: knowing the difference between the made and the well made, and being a link between makers and those who care for their work. One way to see it is in curators, collectors, editors and anyone who chooses and keeps rather than produces. The image can also be read as distance from the making, since the dealer handles what others wove. The tradition reads the picture as descriptive, a quality to recognise.
Lynda Hill's practice reads the two adjoining images: one as inheritance, one as invitation. The degree before is Capricorn 24, a woman going in to the convent as a nun, a life withdrawn from things; here a person lives among the finest things. The degree after is Capricorn 26, a water sprite, where the solid, woven world gives way to something fluid and playful.
As a reading aid, the opposite degree is Cancer 25, something dark, a shadow or a cloak, falling all at once across the right shoulder. The rug dealer deals in patterns that have taken years to make; the shadow arrives in an instant, and between the two is slow accumulation and sudden change.
In a chart
A planet or point anywhere from Capricorn 24°00′ up to, but not including, Capricorn 25°00′ takes this degree. The rule is to count the degree a position is in from one, so a Moon at Capricorn 24°06′ reads Capricorn 25, and so does one at Capricorn 24°58′. Close to either edge, a small change in the birth time or the ephemeris moves a placement into the next image: into Capricorn 26 after Capricorn 24°59′, or back into Capricorn 24 before Capricorn 24°00′. That is why the chart shows the minute beside the degree. - Rewords the image and adds a keynote and a commentary of his own, numbering the degrees as Jones did. In copyright to 2068; not used, and the place he gives the degree in his own structure is not shown.
- Lynda Hill (1995, 2004)
- Uses the symbols as an oracle, with her own commentary, and reads each degree beside the one before and the one after. Her rule and her two names are cited here; her text is not used.
- The Sabian Assembly
- Jones's own study group serves the 1953 image and keyword of a degree in its oracle, without commentary, on purpose.
